Conflict Resolution & Collaboration Training
TRICON and Peoria Area Labor Management (PALM) offer conflict resolution and
collaboration training that blends theory with practical hands-on applications. Please contact TRICON for
rates and availability.
For years, labor-management practitioners were taught to build trust first. Realistically, that could take
months, even years, if at all. In the meantime, contracts still needed to be negotiated and grievances resolved.
In 1995, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community
Affairs and the Illinois Labor-Management Cooperation Committee partnered to develop a three-session series of
training in negotiation and conflict resolution.
Conflict Management Inc. (CMI), a Boston-based consulting firm, facilitated the training. It was founded by
Harvard Law School professor Roger Fisher, who used his Harvard Negotiating Project initiative to develop the
book Getting to Yes, which included The Seven Elements of Negotiating, a unique process that has been highly
successful in resolving even the most difficult problems.
What was so unique about the "Seven Element" process was it provided a framework for negotiating without waiting
for trust to develop. What was so innovative about this process? Trust is viewed as a by-product; it's a good
process that derives good outcomes.

Open Space Technology
Tired of the same ol meeting or conference format? TRICON, in conjunction with
Peoria Area Labor Management (PALM),
can introduce you to a new way of getting at the issues that matter most. Its called Open Space Technology.
Please contact TRICON for more information and to locate experienced facilitators.
Open Space Technology, or OST, is a format or process to engage people in meaningful conversations about issues
most important to them and/or their organizations. It can involve as few as five people, or be effective with a
thousand. The key ingredient, according to Harrison Owen, originator of OST, is people must have a passion for
the issue or issues they bring forward, and they must be willing to be responsible for the outcomes they create.
Owen says it best in his book, Open Space Technology: A User's Guide," Open Space Technology is effective in
situations where a diverse group of people must deal with complex and potentially conflicting material in
innovative and productive ways." Owens has used the OST process with clients all around the world, such as
Procter and Gamble, Dupont, Shell, the IRS, the Army, AT&T, IBM and Lucent Technologies, just to name a few.
The only requirement for OST is to have a room big enough to allow participants an opportunity to sit in a circle,
and for breakout groups to occur. A blank wall is needed to post information and then people. The key to success
is how the theme or topic of the OST event is stated. It needs to be clear and easy to understand. An example might
be: What are the future issues and opportunities for our organization? It is also important to remember that OST is
designed to deal with real issues and concerns.
